Do you really need that acid blocker?
When you shut down the production of stomach acid you decrease
the absorption of minerals. If you decrease magnesium this leads to more
muscle spasm. As a chiropractor for over 34 years I see many patients
that have spastic muscles. Magnesium is also crucial for liver
detoxification pathways, cardiovascular and neurological health. Acid
blockers also decrease the absorption of calcium which is crucial for
bone health. Long term use leads to osteoporosis. This affects 1 out of 3
women and 1 out of 8 men. Decreasing the absorption of minerals from
food is bad for your health. I do my best to tell patients that the
symptoms that brought them into the office could be a direct result of
the drugs they consume regularly.
In addition to the above, acid blockers decrease B 12. This is a
crucial vitamin for the process of methylation. This in turn can raise
your homocysteine levels increasing the risk of dementia, Alzheimer's
disease and stroke.
A new study from Stanford University released in June of 2015
examined over 2.9 million patients taking PPI's and documented a 16%
increase risk for a heart attack and double increase in dying from heart
disease. (PLoS One. 2015 June 10; 10(6):e0124653).
The production of stomach acid is important to your well-being.
Undigested food including inadequate protein digestion irritates the
stomach mucosal lining. Acid secretions destroy bacteria, viruses and
fungi before they enter into the small intestine. This is not a good
thing for your well being.
Once patients understand that these drugs are detrimental to
their health I instruct on how to "Get Off" PPI's based on my clinical

After 4-6 weeks , miss 1 dose of 2 of PPI
After 6-8 weeks, miss 2 doses of 3 of PPI
After 8-10 weeks, quit PPI, continue l-glutamine and then taper by symptoms.
